Betting On Yourself to Win

Risk takers.  Gamblers. The restless.  What happens when you take a common set of personality traits and aim them in a positive direction?  I can tell you: You become a serial entrepreneur.  I am one of them. Entrepreneurs make up a very small portion of the population, because being one is not for the faint of heart.  We take chances – with our money, with other people’s money – all in the pursuit of our business ideals. Be Smart.  Calculate Your Risk. Starting a business from scratch is no small task.  There’s a ton of planning around the business plan, which should be comprehensive, well researched, meticulously articulated and carefully executed.  Even the best business plans need to consider unforeseen events and allow for adjustments as circumstances change. There will always be things that weren’t considered and other surprises.  I guarantee it. Demand is crucial.  Your future business should fulfill a need in the marketplace.  You need to solve a problem for your customers. When your business idea does not, it’s likely you’re spinning your wheels on a dream (which can be very difficult to admit to yourself). An acquaintance of mine once pitched a few different ideas – many of which required large capital investments, years of research, and development.  As a potential investor, those ideas (while fun) left a lot to the imagination. My advice was to start small, move slow, and consider the perspective across the aisle, as a customer, investor, or even a skeptic. The internet is your friend.  A quick Google search will reveal how difficult it is to build a business that stands the test of time.  It’s a long shot! Don’t take more chances than you need to. Be calculated. Most businesses will fail in the first year.  More in the second – and even more in the third. Many hit a wall before gaining momentum, due to under-funding that could’ve been avoided with slightly more patience. Start-up businesses don’t always require huge amounts of upfront and operating capital.  But they should require a high amount of confidence in the first 6-12 months of operating capital.  In my experience, that’s enough time to effectively evaluate the future, necessary planning, and your ability to execute. Stay Healthy.  Professionally and Personally. Entrepreneurs work extremely hard.  They work long hours. They shoulder all of the responsibility.  They stress. A lot. They’re often unhealthy, sacrificing proper work/life balance.  I’ve learned that the key to managing a healthy lifestyle while pursuing the American Dream is an appropriate amount of sleep, a healthy diet, and regular exercise.  If you’re working as hard as most entrepreneurs, I recommend an equal level of commitment to taking care of yourself. While no business is worth compromising your health and happiness; many overlook the fact that it’s possible to compromise your business by being unhealthy – because the two go hand in hand. Stay Humble.  Stay Driven. I’ve served as CEO, CFO and COO for many of my start-up businesses.  I’ve also served as a janitor, project manager, retail clerk, and chauffeur.  Don’t let the potential glory and flash of being your own boss cloud your judgment.  Stay humble. Always do what’s best for your business. Be honest about your abilities.  Do as much as you can. But be prepared to do things you may not enjoy, that are still required for your success.  You’ll wear a number of hats in order to save money. Lead by example, so your future staff does too. For most of us, new and viable business ideas aren’t constantly entering the mind.  Success is often a culmination of timing, cosmic alignment, divine intervention, and certainly a little luck.  That may sound a little hocus pocus – but I’ve started businesses that I felt were properly researched, executed, and funded – only to find out the idea wouldn’t perform long term.  At the same time, I’ve been blessed to have some businesses out-perform my wildest expectations. My preference is the latter of the two. But you get the point: You can’t perfectly plan for everything.  The market is the casino. If that entrepreneurial itch strikes and you’re considering a new business idea, do the research.  There’s a ton of resources that can help. Start with a coach or mentor. Leverage their skills, experience, and network against your own.  Hedge your bets, like the great gambler that you are.   Don’t be scared.  Don’t be careless.  Don’t be hasty.   DO be cautious.  DO be careful. DO solve problems, internally and externally. Hard work, due diligence, and calculated risks have a way of appeasing the entrepreneurial gods.  Stay humble and press forward. It’s a new year and you have decided to quit a bad habit. Quitting any addiction is not just a test of will; it is a chemical reaction in our body that drives behavior. Luckily, CBD is showing some potential in aiding the process of quitting. There are two common addictions that many struggle with: tobacco from cigarettes and THC from cannabis. While CBD research is ongoing, it may be a possible aid for quitting chemical addiction.   WHY QUIT TOBACCO? Smoking tobacco is a pretty harsh vice. Two things happen when you smoke: the nicotine causes your blood vessels to constrict and the tobacco causes your blood to thicken. These two reactions have a pretty long list of correlative issues: cancer, poor lung quality, and increased signs of aging. THC, in heavy use, may be connected to dopamine and serotonin imbalances. These imbalances could be linked to psychological issues such as bipolar disorder and depression (source1, source2). A GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF ADDICTION Why do humans use addictive substances? Often, we are in pain. Whether that is psychological or physical, substance abuse is usually coming from people attempting to self-medicate. Our bodies have a set amount of hormones, and events like an inadequate amount of sleep can throw you out of balance. Abusing exogenous compounds such as THC or nicotine can cause our brains to create a hormonal imbalance. This imbalance leads to dependence – and thus begins the addiction. HORMONES IN ADDICTION Addiction is a very complex set of chemical reactions that are being studied, while still not fully comprehended. The main chemicals involved in addiction are a group of hormones known as neurotransmitters – specifically serotonin and dopamine. Dopamine is a little more complicated than you may remember.  It is not just a “feel good” hormone; it is more of a learning hormone. For example, Pavlov trained dogs to associate a bell with their meals. The bell eventually caused the dopamine spike, not the food. So, dopamine works much more like a learned association hormone that causes a craving (source). Serotonin is a mood-stabilizing hormone. Serotonin can be responsible for staving off depression. Substances like THC and Nicotine may have antidepressant qualities – but when abused, damage the body’s ability to use serotonin properly (source). ENTER CBD CBD is a non-intoxicating chemical of the cannabis plant. CBD acts as a supplement to our bodies’ natural production of endocannabinoids. When ingested, CBD binds to two receptors: CB1 and CB2.  Most CB1 receptors are in the brain and deal with mood and mental function. CB2, on the other hand, mainly deals with the physical side, our immune system, and inflammation (source).   USING CBD FOR QUITTING TOBACCO In a 2013 study, 24 cigarette smokers divided into halves — with twelve given a placebo inhaler and the remaining twelve given a CBD inhaler. The study found the placebo group did nothing, but the CBD group cut down smoking tobacco by 40%. The reduction in smoking could be from a couple of actions CBD takes on the body. CBD may manage stress hormones like cortisol. Most addicts reach for their substance of choice in times of stress. CBD may also be a potent agent in decreasing inflammation and aiding the immune system. This is interesting because there appears to be a link between the body’s inflammatory response and substance abuse. These studies are impressive, but as with most CBD research, it is still in its infancy (source1, source2). USING CBD FOR QUITTING THC The use of CBD is more straightforward when dealing with THC abuse. In your body, you have several CB receptors. While getting “high” from THC, the THC molecules bind to these CB receptors. CBD covers these receptors making the user less high. CBD may also be able to assist in balancing serotonin receptors by removing some of the harmful effects of THC. For those struggling with THC abuse, utilizing CBD may aid in the process of cutting its use. But again, the research is in its early days (source).   THE CYCLE OF QUITTING If you’re pursuing a healthier path, congratulations! Quitting has a cycle: stopping, withdrawal, craving, relapse, and repeating the cycle until you have reached its conclusion. This is a basic model of quitting. CBD may provide some benefit, particularly in the craving and withdrawal phases of quitting (source). Cravings often come from your environment. We condition our bodies to want things at certain times. These cravings work similar to hunger. Most people eat at a similar time, hungry or not. Addicts usually reach for their substance of choice during stressful moments. Thus we can train our bodies to become stressed and reach for our substances of choice. CBD may help fight stress, so it stands to reason that CBD may help dampen cravings. With cravings dulled, you might curb use of an addictive substance. Withdrawal is the physical reaction to a change in substance use. Symptoms of withdrawal can range, but most addicts report similar stories: weight gain, stress, and insomnia, to name a few. CBD might help manage these symptoms as well. On top of CBD’s potential to help get our bodies getting back to homeostasis, remember, addiction is a chemical imbalance issue. CBD may aid in weight management, lowering stress hormones, and helping you get to sleep. As a result, some rehabilitation clinics have begun to incorporate CBD to combat withdrawal symptoms. IN SUMMARY CBD is still in the early days of its research. These are men, women, and kids practicing and competing in sports such as Boxing, Wrestling, and Martial Arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts. Most athletes can benefit from CBD products, but Combat Sports Athletes have some unique conditions. For starters, most of these sports do not have an off season. Grappling based sports are quite rough on the hands and striking sports have the risk of knock outs in practice. It is noteworthy that with the advent of MMA, many Americans are participating in Combat Sports. In the world of MMA, Nate Diaz’s infamous press conference put CBD on the map as a potential recovery agent. In the No Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu scene, Gordon Ryan has a full CBD package. Concussions are a type of TBI, in which after a blow to the head, the brain rattles back and forth causing cell death and inflammation. Most athletes are at risk, however combat sports athletes have another risk: weight cutting and dehydration. One of the functions of water in the body is to help protect organs. Dehydration causes organs to shrink, potentially increasing the risk of the brain rattling. Combat sports athletes should take extra care to protect against TBI and CBD may play a role in protecting and healing the brain, though the findings were unclear. CBD for Prevention of Brain Injury CBD may have elements that promote healthy brain function. Because combat sport athletes are subjected to head trauma, it is important that they get ahead of ailments such as neuroinflammation. A noteworthy case study is the two Diaz brothers, who have over 60 professional fights between them. They have only been knocked out three times between them, and both are well documented cannabis users. In the Israeli Military, the Israel Defense Force has begun utilizing CBD and low dose THC as a potential aid in the prevention of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) (Source). CBD for Post Brain Injury Recovery from head trauma is commonly required to a lesser degree in grappling arts. CBD is a potentially useful compound for reducing the levels of inflammation, post head injury. CBD may have antioxidant properties that might prevent cell death after a serious blow to the head. Combat Sports Athletes can potentially benefit from CBD use post head injury. The research is still ongoing, but as the Israeli Defense Force is showing, there appears to be promising research here for dealing with head injuries. CBD for Stress Reduction  What is stress and the biological mechanisms of this reaction? In short, stress is our response to a stimulus. Once we start responding to a stimulus, our Autonomic Nervous System kicks into gear and gives us two options: fight or flight. This is a good instinct when we are in situations like being chased or needing to fight. The problem occurs when high stress is an everyday occurrence. Many diseases are thought to be attributed to chronic stress: digestive issues, decreased immune support, reduced wound healing, even impaired cognition. Make no mistake- stress is needed for growth, but chronic stress appears to be a recipe for health issues.  Anyone who has been in a combat sports setting can recall times of high stress. This can be from over-training to competition day nerves. No matter where the stress comes from, long durations of stress may be detrimental both physically and mentally. Note: short bursts of stress can be beneficial, whereas long term stress can be damaging. Stress hormones might be down regulated by CBD and this may help with neuroplasticity; our brain’s ability to make connections, which chronic stress may inhibit. With CBD’s potential to reign in stress hormones, this may aid our body’s ability to function at a calmer state. From an athlete’s perspective, being calm under pressure is a huge advantage, potentially helping with learning in practice and game day performance. The potential for CBD coupled with good training, diet, and mental preparation may prove to be a valuable tool for athletes to manage stress and preform under pressure. (Source) CBD for Sleep and Recovery What happens to us when we sleep? Sleep is our body and brain repairing itself from the stressors we put on it during the day. It is believed that athletes require a little more rest than most- upwards of nine hours, but there are some such as Lebron James that go as far as to get twelve hours of sleep. Muscle and soft tissue get repaired, as well as the brain. From Muay Thai to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there is a lot of learning that takes place in practice. Better sleep helps with alertness, which helps us pay closer attention in practice, and helps consolidate what we have learned in practice. So, for pre and post training, good sleep is a must have.     Sleep is considered by some to be the ultimate performance enhancer, but in the time of smartphones it appears that many of us are taking a hit when it comes to the hours of quality sleep we are getting. Speaking from personal experience, Youtube does a great job of keeping me awake while showing me the latest and greatest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu videos. CBD may aid in the balancing of the endocannabinoid system, which helps induce homeostasis, which may lead to improved sleep quality. CBD might also reduce pain. Many of us come home from a 7 to 8 pm practice, with a few bumps, bruises, and nagging old injuries. CBD may be a component in the reduction of inflammation which may aid athletes in getting to a calmer state. A calmer state is conducive to higher quality sleep. Sleep plays a huge role in recovery and when not taken seriously, a lack of sleep can be just as bad as a chronic injury. CBD Truths and Myths, Holiday Edition

Has anyone ever wondered why Grandma got ran over by a reindeer?  Seriously, where in the world was Grandpa during all of this!?  If you ask me, that’s a new low and certainly paints a grim picture for the state of chivalry. Grandma deserved better. Thats all I’m sayin’. One may never know the answer to some questions, but fortunately the internet has answers to others.  I wanted to know if turkey puts you to sleep, how much weight I’ll gain this holiday season, and why people sing in the freezing cold for strangers. Let’s not leave out those ever present Cannabis myths. If I sneak a Franny’s CBD Chocolate this year, will I lose motivation, gain more than turkey weight, and forget my Christmas list? With a little searching, here’s what I found… A small town in Northern England began Christmas caroling in 1678.  This was meant to organize a rebellion against recent tax increases on common folk.  OK, that’s a completely FALSE story that I just made up, but you can pass that along as fact if you want. It’s totally believable and way more interesting than the truth.  Caroling has no pinpointed origin and is a result of different cultures mixing together. Although this is a bit of a let down, the story speaks to the diversity we all currently represent. Form and structure of carols can be traced back to 13th and 14th century processionals, but had nothing to do with Christmas. In fact, singing from house to house is ancient Norse in origin, but we cannot say when it began. Traveling through Time, we find ourselves in England, where the Victorian era resulted in these two traditions merging as one. Even then, caroling didn’t become truly popular until the 19th century. Old world hymns merged with new age songs, printing presses got to work, and eventually they stuck in the hearts and minds of those who read them. Present day, we see a decline in caroling from what it used to be. Most people have stopped going from house to house singing songs of joy- but those who do still wonder, why are we doing this? Now you know that nobody really knows.  Moving on… Tis’ the season for gaining! Are we heading into 2020 with some added weight from the holiday season?  First and foremost, this subject in its entirety cannot be quantified. Every study I found seemed ludicrous considering we’re all very different; we eat different amounts of food, have different body chemistry, and live different lifestyles. For this reason, I will not be regurgitating any of their claims to have figured out just how much weight we can expect to gain. I found examples stating some people gain one pound after the holidays, others two pounds. The ones who should be ashamed are those in the five pounds or more category, not for the weight they gained, but because apparently they didn’t think anyone else wanted seconds. Did Cousin Sharon all of a sudden get hit with the munchies and become selfish?  Could CBD have been the culprit? According to Medical News Today, CBD does NOT make you hungry. Cousin Sharon also wouldn’t have forgotten to pass the plate because CBD has yet to show signs of diminishing memory.  So nice try on that one… you’re on your own, Sharon.  Back to the matter at hand; I’ve come up with my own remedy so you don’t have to avoid that scale come January 1st. Don’t focus on what you eat; focus on what you do afterward. Not immediately of course. We all know running and swimming after eating makes you sick… or does it? That’s a truths and myths for another time. The weight from holiday treats and sweets can only stay if you allow it. Focus your intentions on an increased exercise regimen and tighten that diet back up. Regardless of whether you indulge on CBD Chocolates, pass the plate for seconds or stuff your face with it; if you put in the work, you will not keep that holiday weight. In my opinion, I’ve saved the best for last. Partially because I love turkey; also because I love sleep. Has everyone been speaking lies my entire life, or does Turkey really put you “down for the count”? Google tells me that Turkey contains a chemical called Tryptophan. Without getting into a chemistry lesson, this is basically converted into melatonin which makes you sleepy. So, turkey DOES make you sleepy after its components are broken down and absorbed by our bodies. I wish there wasn’t a “but” here, but it doesn’t contain as much Tryptophan as many believe. Nutritionists have been speculating that the increase in other carbohydrates we consume, in addition to alcohol, gives Turkey a boost. Anyone willing to do a research project on this will have to fight family for who gets no turkey, who gets no alcohol, and who has to eat extra carbs. I suppose the moral to all of this is every myth seems to have some truth. Christmas carolers don’t know how it began, but they do it for the love of tradition. We only gain the weight we accept this Holiday season and turkey isn’t going to replace your sleep aid anytime soon. However, one myth about CBD is actually true, only partially though. While Turkey may not replace your sleep aid, CBD certainly can. It won’t take your long term motivation and throw it out the window, but I believe it can ease your anxiety and lull you to sleep.  Let’s close this out by getting back to the most important part of this entire blog; “Grandma got ran over by a Reindeer.” WHERE WAS GRANDPA!? If you thought Grandpa was off the hook, clearly you were wrong. I’m opening a full scale investigation with the best answer winning a Christmas gift from Franny’s!
